A blood glucose test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. The test can involve a finger prick or a blood draw from your vein. Healthcare providers most commonly use blood glucose tests to screen for Type 2 diabetes, which is a common condition. Your healthcare provider may order a glucose test if you have symptoms of high or low blood sugar levels, such as: -High blood sugar: Increased thirst and urination, blurred vision, fatigue, sores that don't heal, weight loss, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet -Low blood sugar: Feeling shaky or jittery, hunger, fatigue *Some blood glucose tests may require fasting for at least eight hours before the test, while others don't require any special preparation. Your healthcare provider can provide more information about which tests are needed and what preparations may be required.
